Ageing Skin
As we grow older, our bodies produce less collagen that keeps our skin firm and well hydrated, causing lines and wrinkles to deepen and appear on the skin. Collagen and elastin are the two components that provide the support structure for the skin, keeping it smooth, resilient, and youthful. As these fibres break down, the skin loses its strength and elasticity, forming shallow creases on the face. Skin discolouration like age spots, sun spots, uneven tone & texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, deep wrinkles, loss of volume and elasticity are all signs of skin damage and ageing skin. This can appear all over the body, especially the face, décolletage, arms, hands and legs.
How does the skin age?
Our skin is at its best that we are children, where the process of skin cell repair and regeneration is at its highest.
During our teenage years, the skin function becomes altered and the production of sebum (oil) production is increased.
As an adult, the skin barrier deteriorates and as a result, you may develop irregular texture, enlarged pores, acne and uneven skin colour.
By the age of 30, the production of new skin cells become extremely irregular. The skins’ barrier weakens, and the skin starts to develop lines and wrinkles.
CAUSES OF PREMATURE AGEING
- Sun exposure and tanning: Tanning beds and exposure to the sun penetrate your skin with UV rays. These rays damage the DNA in your skin cells, causing wrinkles.
- Smoking: The toxins in cigarette smoke expose your skin to oxidative stress. This causes dryness, wrinkles, and other signs of premature ageing.
- Alcohol intake: Drinking alcohol excessively dehydrates your body. Over time, this dehydration can cause your skin to sag and lose its shape.
- Environment: Pigment spots and wrinkles can be triggered or worsened by pollutants and toxins in your daily environment.
- Too much Stress: A stressful lifestyle can trigger an inflammatory response in your body, as well as hurt your sleep habits. Stress hormones and inflammation can age your body faster.
- Sleep habits: Poor sleep quality is connected to increased signs of ageing and a diminished skin barrier function. Having the recommended amount of sleep, which is at least 7 hours, gives your body an opportunity to refresh and regenerate cells.
With ageing, the outer skin layer (epidermis) thins, even though the number of cell layers remains unchanged. The number of pigment-containing cells (melanocytes) decreases. The remaining melanocytes increase in size. Ageing skin looks thinner, paler, and clear (translucent).

- Take supplements to support your skin and boost collagen production
- Practice sun safety and wear SPF 30 sunscreen daily
- Keep your skin moisturised with a hydrating cream
- Reduce stress
- Quit smoking and reduce any exposure to secondary smoke
- Improve your skin and tissue quality (i.e. boost collagen and elastin) through skin products and treatments
