Other options for tattoo removal include dermabrasion (or sanding) and surgery. These methods can be painful and may be associated with scarring. On the other hand, laser treatments are minimally invasive and present a safer treatment option.

Lasers (powerful beams of light) break down the ink pigments in the dermis, allowing the immune system to process them out of the body.

During the treatment, some patients feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin. The procedure can be made more comfortable with the application of a local numbing agent. The duration of each session depends on the size of the tattoo.

Immediately after treatment, the tattoo will turn white and the surrounding areas may become red and swollen. This is expected and will disappear slowly with time. Lightening of the tattoo is usually noted about 5 to 6 weeks post treatment.

This depends on the size, location, colour, depth and type (amateur versus professional) of tattoo. Ideally, treatments should be performed at least 4 to 8 weeks apart to allow the body sufficient time to dispose of more tattoo pigment after each session.

What colours can be removed?

Almost all coloured can be removed.

  • Dark Colours
  • Grey
  • Black
  • Red
  • Green
  • Blue

Light colours like Sky Blue or Yellow may respond slowly or not at all if there is not enough pigment to attract the laser. However, in these cases we offer a Tattoo service that can cover up the unwanted tattoo with a new one or using skin camouflaging technique, can use a skin colour to tattoo over the old tattoos to simulate the skin tone.

What to expect during treatment:

Topical anaesthetic is applied to the area 45minutes prior to treatment.

Hair must be shaved prior to treatment.

Pain threshold is different between individuals, the treatment is made more comfortable with the application of the anaesthetic to minimise pain.

If the area is large, it is recommended to treat it over different days.

Immediately following the treatment, the tattoo will turn white. This is normal and will subside a few minutes or hours after each session.

No risk of scarring.

Can be used on eyebrows and lips to remove old permanent make-up.

How long is the treatment:

The treatment length depends on the size of the tattoo and the tolerance of the patient. However, a palm sized tattoo, would take up to 30 minutes excluding consultation and numbing.

On average a course of 8-10 treatments is required to remove the tattoo at 6-8 week intervals.
